Our Clean Energy Program is made up of two projects in Northern Colorado, the SunMobile and Renewables on Schools.
The SunMobile: Energy Education for Northern Colorado
TWP's SunMobile brings environmental education and renewable energy to schools and community events in Northern Colorado. Through this innovative new traveling education tool, we provide hands-on renewable energy activities and demonstrations to local schools. The SunMobile is an enclosed trailer that features renewable energy curriculum and hands-on activities and demonstrations about solar energy, both photovoltaics and thermal applications, wind energy and energy efficiency. Students learn what energy is, energy generation methods and their various advantages and disadvantages, and the tangible impact of energy efficiency. Our curriculum selection is geared towards the current education standards of the Poudre School District and we strive to engage students on many levels to encourage their thoughtful involvement in energy issues in the future
Renewables on Schools
Working with our progressive local school system (Poudre School District), we are helping to raise funds for renewable energy installations for schools and assisting them in maximizing the educational value of their energy generating system. We kicked off this program in March 2008 with our exciting fundraising event, Renew the Rockies–The Magic of Clean Energy, and raised $10,000 to help install a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic solar electric system on the new Bethke Elementary School in Timnath, Colorado, just outside TWP's hometown of Fort Collins.
Bethke Elementary represents the culmination of a lot of work towards energy efficient buildings on the part of the school district. The school is the first LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified School west of the Mississippi. It is built to Energy Star Specifications and will also be receiving the Green Globe Award. The new 10kW system will power 1/10 of the school’s power during the year, and 100% of the power during the summer. This system will be a great real-time educational tool for the teachers and student of Bethke for many years to come.
Elizabeth Mozer, our Local Program Director, is working with PSD to select the next school beneficiary and is already starting to think about next year’s Renew the Rockies event! Please contact her with any questions or to find out more about the Clean Energy program in general.
